Woman Killed in Tractor Collision; Locals Block Road Demanding Compensation.

Kandi: Kalita Devi, the wife of Rajnath Mehta and a resident of Sonpura village within the Kandi police station area, died in a road accident late Thursday evening. It is reported that Kalita Devi was crossing the road near her home when a tractor, laden with earth and sand and approaching from the opposite direction, struck her with great force. The impact was so severe that she sustained critical injuries.

Following the incident, family members and villagers hurriedly rushed her to the Referral Hospital in Majhiaon for emergency medical attention, where doctors declared her dead after an examination. Upon receiving the news of the woman’s death, the family was plunged into deep distress, and an atmosphere of mourning enveloped the village.

Outraged by the incident, villagers and family members staged a protest on Friday morning by placing Kalita Devi’s body on the road, thereby blocking the main Kandi–Sundipur road. The protesters demanded strict legal action against the tractor owner and adequate compensation for the bereaved family. Due to the road blockade, long queues of vehicles formed on both sides, and traffic came to a complete standstill.

Upon receiving information about the commotion, Kandi Police Station In-charge Asfaq Alam arrived at the scene with a police contingent and immediately set about bringing the situation under control. Given the escalating tension, Circle Officer (CO) Rakesh Sahay also reached the accident site, engaged in dialogue with the villagers, and succeeded in pacifying them.

CO Rakesh Sahay stated that strict action would be taken against tractors operating on the roads without proper registration and insurance coverage. He further informed that he has written to the District Magistrate, recommending stringent measures against such vehicles and making it mandatory for their drivers to possess a valid driving license.

After extensive efforts, a consensus regarding compensation was reached between the administration and the villagers. An immediate financial assistance of ₹2 lakh was provided by the tractor owner, along with a written assurance that the remaining ₹1 lakh would be disbursed within 15 days. Following this agreement, the villagers lifted the road blockade, and traffic flow was restored to normalcy.

The Circle Officer further informed that, in accordance with government provisions, an additional financial assistance of ₹1 lakh would be provided to the bereaved family. Furthermore, a recommendation has been made to provide an additional sum of ₹20,000 under the ‘Parivarik Labh Yojana’ (Family Benefit Scheme) upon the issuance of the death certificate. Meanwhile, in connection with the hit-and-run case, the District Transport Office has assured that an additional compensation of ₹2 lakh will be provided, based on the findings of the post-mortem report.
Concurrently, Block Chief Satyendra Kumar Pandey—alias Pinku Pandey—leveled scathing allegations against local brick kiln owners. He stated that soil and sand are being extracted illegally in the Sonpura, Barwadih, Dumarsota, and Sundipur areas, leading to frequent accidents and endangering human lives.

Adopting a firm stance, the Circle Officer declared that a complete ban would be imposed on the illegal sand mafia and that a system for the panchayat-wise distribution of sand would be implemented shortly. Currently, the police have seized the tractor involved in the accident. Following the completion of the post-mortem formalities, the family members of the deceased performed the final rites on the banks of the Son River.
