Majhiaon: The murder of three-year-old Anurag Oraon in Obra village, under the Bardihha police station area, has caused a stir in the area. Police recovered the child’s body from a pigeon pea field on Tuesday morning and sent it to Garhwa for a post-mortem examination.
According to reports, Anurag, the 3-year-old son of Jainendra alias Jitendra Oraon, a resident of Obra village, went missing around 3 pm on Monday. The deceased’s mother, Meera Devi (28), said Anurag had gone to the market with his grandmother, Shanti Kunwar, and was playing on the roadside. Meanwhile, his grandmother went to the field to pull grass, and his aunt, Pratima Kumari, went to the river to prepare for a race. Anurag disappeared shortly afterward.
When no trace of him was found even after extensive searching, the family informed Bardihha police station in-charge, Rishikesh Kumar Singh. The police registered a case of kidnapping under case number 10/26 and began investigation. On Monday evening, a police team arrived at the home and conducted an investigation.
Dead body found in pigeon pea field
Anurag’s body was found around 10 a.m. Tuesday in a field of pigeon pea and ginora belonging to the deceased’s uncle, Rampravesh Oraon, about 100 yards from his home. A sack of cotton was also found near the body.
It is said that the child’s father’s maternal uncle, Sudhan Oraon, a resident of Gatierwa Tola in the Rehal police station area, had gone to the fields to collect tooth sticks when he discovered the body. He brought the child home in a distraught state and informed the police.
Station in-charge Rishikesh Kumar Singh said that prima facie it appears the child may have been poisoned, as black marks were found on his face. However, the actual cause will only be clear after the post-mortem report. A dog squad was called in following villagers’ outrage.
The discovery of the body sparked outrage in the village. At the villagers’ request, a dog squad was called in from Medininagar. The sniffer dog first went to a banyan tree, then to the home of the deceased Ward No. 8 member, Shobha Devi. There, it stood near the grill and then went inside and sat under a cot.
The police then interrogated Shobha Devi’s husband, Lalan Oraon, and took him into custody and took him to Bardiha police station. They demanded the death penalty for the accused.
While Lalan Oraon was being taken to the police station, a large crowd of villagers gathered and began demanding the execution of the murderer. The station in-charge appealed to the people to maintain peace and cooperate with the investigation. He assured that strict action would be taken against the culprits once the investigation is complete. Police remained deployed at the scene from 10 am to 5 pm. The villagers also praised the promptness of the police administration.
A mountain of sorrows fell on the poor family
The deceased’s father, a very poor laborer, had gone to Pune to work before Dussehra. Anurag was his only son. The family also has a one-year-old daughter. Mother Meera Devi, grandmother Shanti Kunwar, and other family members are inconsolable after the incident.
There is also talk in the village that this innocent child may have been murdered due to superstition or a belief in ghosts. However, the police are investigating all aspects. Currently, an atmosphere of grief and anger prevails in the entire area.
