Meral: These days, there are reports of a large-scale illegal sand trade in the Meral police station area. It is being reported that sand is being illegally lifted from the Balchaura Ghat of the Kanhar River at night and transported via tipper trucks and heavy vehicles to several nearby villages, including Gerua, Hasandag, and Meral, all within the Meral police station area.
According to local sources, this illegal trade is based in the Balchaura Kanhar River Ghat in Dhurki block and extends to various villages. It is alleged that the sand is being dumped in villages and sold at high prices through brokers and agents. This is causing revenue loss to the Jharkhand government, while also encouraging illegal activities at the local level.
Sources also say that some influential people and alleged white-collar leaders are also involved in this illegal business, due to which people involved in the business are fearlessly transporting sand at night. In this regard, a person, on the condition of anonymity, claimed that those involved in this business have “management everywhere” and allegedly fixed “entry fees” are also paid for the movement of vehicles.
It is said that the illegal sand transportation involves several vehicles including a vehicle number UP 64 CT 0775, which continuously move in the area from around 9 pm to 6 am.
Locals say that these vehicles, moving at high speeds, pose a risk of accidents. A few days ago, a tipper truck loaded with illegal sand lost control and collided with a tractor near Bairiyadamar in Dandai block. However, no concrete action was taken in this case either.
Villagers say that if the administration doesn’t stop this illegal trade in a timely manner, a major accident could occur in the future. Now it remains to be seen whether the administration will investigate and take action, or whether this matter will remain limited to discussion.
